You probably never saw this one coming, but it’s happening. Reports say Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers in the MCU cannon, will become a villain, until Captain Marvel 3. This news was broke by inside sources that uncovered the news to the publication WeGotThisCovered. The sources told the publication that Marvel was interested in the story arc developed in the comics where Carol was possessed by an alien that took command of her will and turned her against the Avengers. The story plays out in such a fascinating way that the character takes down most of the heroes and continues on with that arc.
Marvel has been interested with what could happen now that most of the former Avengers have seen an exit in the franchise. The most popular hero, Iron Man, was sacrificed in order to defeat the main villain Thanos, and Captain Steve Rogers also took an exit by retiring from his role and going on to live his life in the past. Other Avengers also had different routes to follow. Falcon and the Winter Soldier took on a path of their own securing a series that is going to air on Disney+, Wanda also has her own arc following the events of the last Avengers film, and all the other Avengers will have different arcs to follow until they come together again in the next crossover.
Other projects coming down the pipeline include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther 2, Blade, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The interesting choice may come from the fact that Captain Marvel is also an interesting character in herself. Recently there has been a call to introduce strong female characters into the MCU and this has been the character to have her own standalone film since the franchise kickstarted in 2008. The same could also been said at the time when the greatest villain which had been hyped since the early days finally made a debut and saw his demise at the end of the MCU. This could be an important storyline as Marvel figures out who could be the next best villain after Thanos in the wake of a dramatic shakeup in their timeline.
The current storyline in the comics has seen a great response from comic fans and this includes the overall feel of how the character grows. Her famous costume was revamped and the character follows a more grounding development which sees the title given to her being “The Last Avenger.” This however, could be the twist that Marvel is looking for because the next installment of the Avengers crossover is going to be called Avengers 5.
More details will be coming soon as the sources drop info.
